Introducing the Master Chef, Travel, and Becoming a Published Author Quests!

 

With our third Session in play, we’re thrilled to share three new Quests.

Quests are real-world projects to master 21st-century skills. Usually lasting four- to six-weeks, each Quest includes a series of challenges bound by a compelling narrative and is designed to deliver 21st century skills while simultaneously incorporating traditional topics like science, social studies, and history.

Have you ever gotten lost in a book, found yourself in a world nothing like your own, or has your life been transformed after reading a great book? Books can take us on many journeys, and ideas written down have changed the destiny of men and nations for better and worse.

Books play an important role in our lives and are said to be our best companions. They demand nothing from us, while providing plenty of joy. We also learn a lot from them and can be transformed into a world of imagination.

In our “Becoming a Published Author Quest,” Heroes will become an author and write a compelling narrative that transports the reader into a world you’ve created. They will not only have the chance to write the story, but will also illustrate it as well! The goals are to practice the art of storytelling, creative writing within time-constraints, and add professionally bound books to our library!!

High School


Introducing the Travel Quest!

Is there a destination you've always wanted to travel to? Maybe Bora Bora, Europe, Austria, or even somewhere is the United States? This Quest puts heroes in the shoes of travel agents whose job it is to run a travel agency, organize, and pitch their pre-packaged travel plans and vacations to vacationing patrons—and in this case, the high school heroes will be the patrons. In essence, heroes will build a Google Earth Tour of a trip for those who are not able to join them. Along the way heroes will work together to create travel itineraries, develop budgets, work through the trip preparations and determine which travel tools are most useful.They will then present their lessons learned regarding travel and what they have learned as they have researched different parts of the world. The overall goal is that heroes will develop research and planning skills that will translate to their “Calling." And that they will create for themselves a trip they'll never forget.

The trip will have the following requirements:

  • Attendance must be approved by a parent(s)

  • Must have at least 1 chaperone for every 4 high schooler

  • Your parents may not pay for the trip. Must fundraise as a whole group

  • Anywhere in the world

  • Must have a timeline. Trip must include at least 3-4 educational aspects learners want to learn more about.

  • Trip should be fun and build cross-cultural competence and awareness

  • Trip plan must answer all the questions from the Travel Quest challenges

  • Trip should be life changing

  • Trip must take place during a break from school

  • Trip needs to be planned for a time when all learners can attend

Beyond Quest planning, heroes had their third and fourth Civilization discussions during which they discussed the history and current issues surrounding mass and school shootings, as well as potential solutions for gun control laws. The second Civilization included the topic of immigration. Heroes created five minute videos showcasing the past, present, and future of immigration laws.

Introducing the Master Chef Quest!

Why does hot sauce burn your tongue when it’s really cool? Why does a baked cake rise? Why do some cookies end up being hard and crispy and others warm and gooey? How do you cook that perfect steak or soufflé?

Almost everyone would love to be a better cook, but becoming a Master Chef is hard work. Almost everyone would love to know more about how the world works, but studying Chemistry can be SO BORING.

Welcome to the Master Chef Quest, where you will take on two worthy challenges: (1) Experimenting with various dishes to measure, combine and cook to perfection and (2) Using your recipes and the dishes you create as a springboard to explain the specific and general workings of atoms, elements, molecules and chemical reactions.

The final exhibition will be a combination Top Chef Cook-off and National Science Chemistry Presentation Competition, where your team sees what delicious dish it can create from a random set of ingredients while simultaneously using models, drawings, simulations and descriptions to explain how the science of chemistry can help a chef. Professional chefs and scientists will evaluate your dishes and chemistry knowledge in front of a public audience, so bring your A-game!
