Communities Creating Their Own Schools

We’re thrilled that Transcend—our nation’s premiere research and development (R&D) organization—has named The Forest School in a study of innovative “out-of-system” learning models, titled “Communities Creating Their Own Schools.”

In their national study, Transcend looked for four things:

  1. Demonstrated innovation that represents a transformative shift from the industrial-era model of school;

  2. Learning models that had a “human-centered” approach where families have a hand in designing them;

  3. Models that were intentionally student-centered; and

  4. School that provided equitable and inclusive access.

We’re honored to be named in this study, which highlights our apprenticeships and self-directed learning model. This most recent mention adds to a growing list of studies that have called out our school, including Harvard's Christensen Institute, Next Generation Learning Challenges, the Canopy study of innovative U.S. school models, HundrEd, and others.

We are so grateful to our heroes, families, staff, and partners for their pioneering spirits as we build the future of learning!
